The thyroid gland produces two main hormones, thyroxine and triiodothyronine and calcitonin minor. The release of thyroxine and triiodothyronine is controlled by the hypothalamus and TSH secreted by the adenohypophysis of the pituitary gland. Thyroxine and triiodothyronine are stored in the thyroid follicles and released as needed to control the body's metabolic rate. Specifically, they act to increase the rate of protein synthesis and the rate of release of energy from carbohydrates. Increased levels of parathyroid hormone causes bones to release calcium from the kidneys to retain calcium, which would otherwise be lost in the urine, and small intestine to absorb calcium. Medical marijuana does not increase teen drug use

Teens in the US are smoking more pot, but don't blame medical marijuana. A recent survey of risky behaviour in teens indicates that while marijuana use has risen in recent years, the increase is not due to the drug's legalisation for medical purposes.

Marijuana use is currently legal?for medicinal purposes?in 17 US states, but the federal government still regards the drug as an illegal substance. Federal officials have recently increased efforts?to shut down legal marijuana dispensaries deemed to be too close to schools and universities.

A team of three economists led by Daniel Rees?of the University of Colorado at Denver analysed data from the US Centers for Disease Control's Youth Risk Behavior Survey to find out whether legalisation of medical marijuana leads to increased drug use in teens.

The survey tracks a number of behaviours, including self-reported marijuana use. Rees and colleagues sifted through data for the years 1993-2009, looking at outcomes such as marijuana use at school, frequent marijuana use, and the use of other substances, including alcohol and cocaine.

The team found that while teen marijuana use has risen since 2005, the increase was not correlated in a statistically significant way with whether or not the state that teens resided in had legalised the drug. "There is anecdotal evidence that medical marijuana is finding its way into the hands of teenagers, but there's no statistical evidence that legalisation increases the probability of use," said Rees in an?online statement?from the University of Oregon.

A number of recent studies have added support to proponents' claims that cannabis and cannabis-based treatments are?safe and effective?for conditions ranging from rheumatoid arthritis to multiple sclerosis, but legalising medical marijuana has been a tough sell in US states this year. Ballot initiatives?have failed in 11 states?so far, and passed in just one. Seven more states are slated to decide what side of the fence they fall on later this year.

Rattlesnake bites kid near Lake Mary church

A child was bitten Friday by a rattlesnake in Lake Mary near Holy Cross Lutheran Church, according to Lake Mary police.

The unidentified 9-year-old had just arrived at the church with his mother at about 12:45 p.m. to pick up a sibling when he reached into a patch of grass and was bitten on a finger, said Officer Zach Hudson.

Call this a curiosity. While we were catching up on GDC stuff, we stumbled across?Roccat's answer to the tired "Is PC Gaming is dead" question. Its answer, as a peripheral maker, is naturally a big fat "No," but it has added an interesting caveat: PC gaming needs an iOS, Windows Phone 7, or Android companion app.

Allow us to introduce you to Roccat Power-Grid, an app that can sync with your Skype or Teamspeak channels, give you real-time readouts on CPU temperature and hard disc space, allow you to tune game audio on the fly, and lets you create custom macros for your favorite games complete with themed icons.

Roccat plans to give the app away for free, but will support it with fancy keyboards that ship with USB phone docks. Check one out:

Roccat believes millions are going to jump on its companion app, and while our guts have to disagree with that, we do see the appeal. Keyboards that ship with those programmable buttons on the side are often big, expensive, and look silly. Using a smartphone to do those tasks specifically certainly sounds preferable.

We'll keep our eyes on this. As PC gaming evolves, so does what we do with it. Bringing our phones into the fold seems like a pretty organic development in the scene. If it catches or not, however, remains to be seen.

Carshalton College hairdressing students will be styling models at the fashion shows taking place during the Ideal Home Show in Earls Court, London from 16 March to 1 April 2012.

Students will be working at the Ideal Home Show from Friday 16 to Sunday 18 March. On Friday students will be styling 19 models for a fashion show promoting sustainable fashion for designer Elissavet, Womenswear Ethical fashion designer producing high end classics with a twist. On Saturday and Sunday students will be working on two shows each day styling 20 models per show from company Models of Diversity for designers Ramil Makinano, a Filipino-British designer who uses bright, neon, lighting as the reference for the colour palette, in contrast to the very dark colour of the medieval armour, Albert with an evening wear collection and Marcus Flylander and his street chic luxury brand "FLYLANDER".

Students include Jemma Vincent, a Level 3 Modern Apprentice and first year students from the Level 3 course. Carshalton College Tutor, Fiona Chaffey, is Head of Hair for each show and involving the students to gain experience working at events.

For over 103 years the Ideal Home Show has been bringing ideas and inspiration to generations of British home owners and the show is back for 2012 at Earls Court London, with more features, more expert advice and more fun for all the family.

From 16 March to 1 April this multi-award winning show will be bringing together more than 600 quality exhibitors from all over the UK to offer a unique shopping experience for all areas of the home, including ideal Interiors, ideal Home Improvements, ideal Gardens, ideal Gadgets, ideal Food, ideal Housewares, ideal Shopping and ideal Woman.

Bus station blasts in Kenya's capital kill 4

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) ? A grenade attack at one of the main bus stations in Kenya's capital killed at least four people and wounded 40 others Saturday, officials said, in the latest bloodshed blamed on sympathizers of Somalia's al-Qaida-linked insurgency.

Witnesses reported that people in a moving car hurled three grenades at the outdoor terminal, police spokesman Charles Owino said. Government minister Esther Murugi, who spoke after visiting Nairobi's main hospital where the wounded were brought, said six needed emergency surgery. Earlier, a Red Cross official said 12 people were in critical condition.

The blasts are the latest in a string of small arms, bomb and grenade attacks that have killed scores of people since Kenya sent troops across the border into neighboring Somalia in October. The incursion followed a string of attacks by Somali gunmen on Kenyan soil. Somalia's al-Qaida-linked insurgency vowed revenge and incited sympathizers to carry out attacks in Kenya.

"The more you attack us, the more we will become aggressive," Owino said.

Witness Ruben Otsembo was filling up his motorcycle at a nearby gas station when a man covered in blood ran up shouting about an explosion and bodies, and then collapsed and died in front of him. Another man, who was wounded in the arms and legs while he was buying a bus ticket, said he heard two explosions.

"It was the second one that got me," said Frederick Shikutu, 36, as he was being loaded into an ambulance.

Racial divide runs deep in U.S. schools, study finds

(Reuters) - Black and Latino students across the United States are far more likely to be suspended than white students - and far less likely to have access to rigorous college-prep courses, according to a sweeping study released on Tuesday by the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights.

The trove of data, collected from 72,000 schools serving 85 percent of the nation's students, revealed tremendous disparities in the public school experiences of minority and white students.

Some of the most striking findings involved discipline: one in five African-American boys - and one in 10 African-American girls - was suspended from school during the study period, the 2009-10 school year.

Overall, African-American students are 3-1/2 times more likely to be suspended or expelled than their white peers. And 70 percent of students arrested or referred to law enforcement for disciplinary infractions are black or Latino, the study found. Other researchers have found that students who are repeatedly punished by being barred from campus are far more likely to drop out.

Academic opportunities also vary widely by race. Among high schools that serve predominately Latino and African-American students, just 29 percent offer a calculus class and only 40 percent offer physics. In some school districts, those numbers are even more glaring. In New York City, for instance, just 10 percent of the high schools with the highest black and Latino enrollment offer Algebra II.

U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan was careful to say that his department is "not alleging overt discrimination in some or all of these cases."

But he said he hoped the data would prompt soul-searching as educators across the nation confront inequities.

"In the big picture, this is really about self-analysis," Duncan said. He urged teachers and administrators to "look in the mirror, at the good, the bad and the ugly, and figure out what's going on."

That may be easier said than done, said Kevin Welner, director of the National Education Policy Center at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

The data hint uncomfortably at crude assumptions and enduring stereotypes about "who should be in school, who should be preparing to go to college, who can learn" - and "many of those beliefs stem back from before you or I were born," Welner said. "That's hard to change."

Other studies over the decades have found similar racial disparities in student discipline and academic opportunity. But the new report, which Duncan is scheduled to release today in an event at Howard University, is more detailed and comprehensive than most.

It breaks down the national data district by district and school by school. And it looks at racial disparities in realms as varied as access to pre-kindergarten programs; success in Advanced Placement courses; and the use of physical restraints on students with disabilities.

The release of such wide-ranging data "is very important for is if we're to gain the national will to overcome our aversion to looking at race," said Russell Skiba, who directs the Equity Project at Indiana University's School of Education. "It's tough to talk about race. It's awkward. But this data gives us a bit of a road map."

The report, known as the Civil Rights Data Collection, seeks to prod change by calling attention to districts that have used what Duncan called "best practices" to reduce inequities.

It points, for instance, to a high school in Montgomery County, Maryland, that serves a largely black and Hispanic population - and enrolls those students in physics at an impressive rate. The report also highlights an elementary school in an impoverished neighborhood of Dade County, Florida that enrolls nearly 17 percent of its black and Hispanic students in a program for gifted students, more than triple the national rate.

Duncan said he hoped administrators in other districts would ask how those schools had achieved their success, then follow suit. "There are some encouraging things in this data," he said. "Frankly, there are some very troubling things as well. But the only way forward is to know the truth."

Ocean acidification worst in 300 million years, study finds

Researchers at Columbia University have found that carbon dioxide emissions have lowered the pH at a rate unparalleled in at least the last 300 million years of our planet's history.

The oceans are becoming more acidic faster than they have in the past 300 million years, a period that includes four mass extinctions, researchers have found.

Then, as is happening now, increases in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere warmed the planet and made the oceans more acidic. These changes are associated with major shifts in climate and mass extinctions.

But while past increases in the atmosphere's carbon dioxide levels resulted from volcanoes and other natural causes, today that spike is due to human activities, the scientists note.

"What we're doing today really stands out," lead researcher B?rbel H?nisch, a paleoceanographer at Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, said in a news release. "We know that life during past ocean acidification events was not wiped out ? new species evolved to replace those that died off. But if industrial carbon emissions continue at the current pace, we may lose organisms we care about ? coral reefs, oysters, salmon." [Humans Causing 6th Mass Extinction]

As the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere increases, oceans absorb that carbon dioxide, which turns into a carbon acid. As a result the pH ? a measure of acidity ? drops, meaning the water has become more acidic. This dissolves the carbonates?needed by some organisms, like corals, oysters or the tiny snails salmon eat.

In their review, published Thursday (March 1) in the journal Science, H?nisch and colleagues found the closest modern parallel about 56 millions ago in what is called the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum, when atmospheric carbon concentrations doubled, pushing up global temperatures. Extinctions in the deep sea accompanied this shift. (The PETM occurred about 9 million years after the dinosaurs went extinct.)

But, now, the ocean is acidifying at least 10 times faster than it did 56 million years ago, according to H?nisch.

Ocean acidification may also have occurred when volcanoes pumped massive amounts of carbon dioxide into the air 252 million years ago, at the end of the Permian period, and 201 million years ago, at the end of the Triassic period, they found. Both are associated with mass extinctions.

"The current rate of (mainly fossil fuel)?carbon dioxide release?stands out as capable of driving a combination and magnitude of ocean geochemical changes potentially unparalleled in at least the last 300 million years of Earth history, raising the possibility that we are entering an unknown territory of marine ecosystem change," the researchers conclude in their paper.

No Cost Mortgage Refinance | Sunk Costs Are Irrelevant

I last refinanced my mortgage in July 2010. ?Back then I was trying to reduce my rate from 5% AND get out of escrow. ?I was extremely successful and garnered a nice 4.375% 30 year fixed mortgage. ?I thought I was done, but rates continued to fall. ?I started playing with a mortgage calculator and realized I could probably save another $25k over the life of the loan if I refinanced. ?That kind of money is worth a shot. ?

Like a lot of people right now, I don't consider myself cash rich right now so I don't want to have to bring money to another closing. ?Thus, I decided to go the route of a no cost mortgage refinance. ?Now, if it were truly no cost, everyone would do it. ?In a no cost refinance you end up sacrificing a little bit on the interest rate side to avoid having to pay anything at closing. ?If you can pay the closing costs, you probably should because your rate will be better, and you'll end paying far less over the life of the loan. ?You can use the exact same process described here. ?The only difference is you will be paying ~1-2% of the cost of the loan at the closing. ?

I kept the following diary as I went through the process for my new mortgage:

• Monday morning, 1/9 ? Emailed mortgage broker (the same mortgage broker I've used in the past) to see what rate I could get if I wanted to refinance at no cost. He said the best that he could see was 4.125%. ?I said I was hoping for 4%, and that I would just wait and see over the next few weeks or months if it would drop since my rate was already good.

• Monday afternoon 1/9 ? Broker calls me. ?Rates fell during the day. ?4% is available. ?Serendipity? ?I run upstairs for a short conference with DW and then call the broker back. ?We talk about recent sales in my neighborhood likely to bring down my home's appraisal which could put the 80% LTV in jeopardy in spite of my diligent overpaying of my mortgage to get my equity higher. ?If I don't get the 80% LTV, I would either have to bring money to the closing to make up the difference or walk away and lose the money I spent on the appraisal. ?It's a risk I'm willing to take. ?I pay $375 at that point for a new appraisal. ??This is the only sunk cost in this investment strategy aside from my time. ?I tell my broker I want the same deal as last time with all costs wrapped into the mortgage and no escrow or pre-payment penalties. ?He takes this information and begins arranging for an appraisal.

• Tuesday afternoon 1/10 ? Mark, an appraiser calls me to schedule the appraisal for Friday 1/13 at noon. ?I dig through emails and come up with my old appraisal from a year and a half ago to hand to Mark when he comes. ?This will make his job easier because it is a recent appraisal, and more importantly the previous valuation will psychologically serve as an anchor for his thinking. ?This is important because it is $408,000. ?If you read my net worth posts, you know this is not even close to what sites like Zillow think about my house. ?I detailed this Zillow effect last May, and it continues.

• Wednesday afternoon 1/11 ? The broker's assistant sent me all the loan documents to review and sign as well as a list of the needed materials to complete the application (copy of driver's license, 2 most recent paystubs, W2, 2 most recent bank statements, and some clarifications around recent credit inquiries). ?This is by far the most tedious part, but if you already have your personal financial life organized, it's not too much of a pain.

• Monday 1/16 ? DW and I get all the paperwork together, sign all the documents, and fax it to my mortgage broker. ?We receive confirmation of receipt and that we'll be using a local real estate attorney for the closing ? meeting him at my broker's office.

• Thursday 1/19 ? My broker sent over a copy of my appraisal. ?I opened it with fingers crossed. ?Well, wadda ya know? ?It's $375,000. ?The exact number I told the appraiser I needed. ?Either I am shockingly prescient with my ability to forecast real estate values or I lead him down a path. ?I'll let you decide. ?Make the system work for you. ?As a result of this good news my broker sent the loan off for underwriting. ?This typically takes a few days. ?Also, the insurer for our home owner's policy called to make sure it was OK to give information to our broker.

• Friday 1/20 ? I called US Bank, the holder of my current mortgage, this morning because I saw an article on Yahoo saying rates had fallen again. ?I told them explicitly that I was in the process of refinancing, and that they were likely going to lose my business, but this was their chance to keep me. ?Honestly, I should have done this from the start probably. ?I just didn't even think of it because I'm so used to going through my broker. ?I learned from the nice CSR that although I had just done an appraisal, they would have to order another one no matter what. ?Ridiculous, right? ?That's another $400 in costs that would have to be offset by the rate. ?However, the best no cost option she could offer was at 4.125%. ?I thanked her for her time and finally started to relax into the idea that 4% is a good rate and just maybe I can stop angling for something better.

• Tuesday 1/24 ? I was notified by email from my mortgage broker that we have initial approval from the underwriters and that there is no additional information necessary from me. ?A very positive sign and great that I don't have to any more legwork.

• Tuesday 1/31 ? We've reached the stage where we need to schedule the closing. ?We're trying to land on a date about 3 weeks out to insure all the i's are dotted and t's are crossed.

• Tuesday 2/7 ? We're all set. ?I confirmed the closing for 3pm on 2/24 working with the lawyer and my broker. ?Closing will be at the broker's office to facilitate any last minute clarifications.

• Friday 2/10 ? I was instructed by my mortgage broker to go to RBC (now PNC) to close my HELOC. ?The last time we re-financed, my broker set this up for me as safety net of sorts. ?In uncertain times when DW was really sick and my job felt in jeopardy due to the merger, this served as insurance. ?I was really happy with it until this year they charged a $50 fee for having the account. ?I of course fought them on it, but the fee was buried in the paperwork details. ?I didn't like it, but I paid it because I liked the security it gave me. ?I ended up never needing a penny of it which was a blessing. ?Fast forward to Friday and when I go to close it (and my checking and my safety deposit box), RBC wants to CHARGE ANOTHER FEE OF $250 because I was closing it within 3 years. ?Are you kidding me? ?Russell, who was helping me, understood the absurdity. ?He said he would work with my broker to subordinate the HELOC until year 3 when it could be closed at no cost. ?However, wouldn't that still leave me with a $50 annual fee? ?Again, Russell said he would work it out with my broker because he had to do this sort of thing all the time to get around RBC's ridiculous fee structure. ?I liked Russell. ?he was competent and I kind of felt bad for him taking all of my money out, but there's no way I will ever do business with them again. ?I gave him my broker's info and left.

• Wednesday 2/15 ? I got an email from my broker. ?It turns out if we subordinate the HELOC then my rate would go up and RBC won't budge on the fee so my broker is going to cover the $250. ?Now, I know mortgage brokers are not able to actually "eat costs" without breaking RESPA rules so I'll be curious to see where my $250 'discount' comes into the equation. ?He's a nice guy, and it really is the right thing to do since he set me up at that bank in the first place, but I think the really interesting part here is the short-sightedness of RBC. ?Here you have a mortgage broker who can push his clients to get their HELOC's virtually anywhere he likes, and RBC is going to nickel and dime him over one fee for one client. ?That is stupid beyond belief but so typical of many big banks today. ?I'm so glad to be completely done with RBC. ?

• Friday 2/24 ? Apparently I should be allowed to arrange everything for a mortgage refinance except for figuring out the directions on how to get to closing since I managed to mess that up twice. ?We eventually made it to my broker's office and sat down with the attorney. ?We went over the most relevant details, fixed the misspelling of DW's name, and signed our names dozens of times. ?We were done in under an hour, and it was great to have both our broker and our attorney in the room to answer questions. ?Definitely try to work it that way if you can. ?Our new lender is Freddie Mac unless they decide to sell it another bank to service the loan which is quite common. ?We are going to end up getting about $800 back which will just about cover the last bit I need to fully fund the 2011 Roth IRA's. ?Also, we'll end up skipping our March payment due to the timing of everything so it will feel like we have even more money. ?I'm debating whether to throw that at the mortgage right away or use it for the 2012 Roth's. ?Once the dust settles I'll be opening a new HELOC (one with no fees!) at First National Bank. ?It's already all arranged.

So about 1.5 months and few hours of legwork and paperwork later, I'm the proud owner of the exact same home I already live in! ?Only now I'm going to save about $38,739 more dollars on the cost of that home over the mortgage period (assuming no pre-payment). ?It will actually be more since I can pre-pay even more principle. ?However, with an effective tax rate of 2.88%, I may forego pre-payment for other investments. ?Lots of decisions, but what's not to like!
