Lesbian Contestants Make History at Miss California USA
Mollie Thomas' memories of childhood sound like those a lot of women might recall.
"I loved to dress up," she said. "I grew up as a dancer."
In some ways, it's a typical American story. When she was little, Mollie Thomas dreamed of becoming a beauty queen.
"I had a pretty intense collection of tiaras when I was pretty little," she says.
However, Thomas coming out as a lesbian later in life is what makes what she did Sunday night decidedly untypical and historic. The UCLA student joined hairstylist Jenelle Hutcherson of Long Beach as the first two openly gay women to compete for Miss California USA.
"It felt like the corners of cheeks just wouldn't stop vibrating I was so nervous," said Hutcherson.
Hutcherson was most nervous about the evening gown competition and wearing her purple tuxedo, while Thomas says it was the bathing suits and showing her multiple tattoos that gave her goosebumps.
"My first big coming out on stage was in my swimsuit," says Thomas. "I did a lot of prep for that, a lot of working out."
Neither contestant winded up winning the pageant. That honor went to Natalie Pack, 22, a University of California Irvine junior who has already made her mark as a model.
But in truth, Thomas and Hutcherson had different goals.
This was, after all, the same competition where Carrie Prejean made headlines two years ago by speaking out against same-sex marriage. Thomas and Hutcherson wanted to send the opposite message.
"I got up there to make me happy," says Hutcherson. "I got up there to influence these kids that I work with as a mentor, to be themselves, to be who they are and see how the world reacts."
"Being who you are and being true to yourself and being a strong woman rather than being your stereotypical beauty pageant girl," is how Thomas saw her role.
Thomas says she had such a good time, she's planning to compete again next year. And in true Hollywood fashion, she already has an entourage. They call themselves, "Team Mollie."

Melissa McCarthy Doesn't Want a Bridesmaids Sequel Without Kristen Wiig
'Bridesmaids' fans aren't the only ones flipping out over the possibility of a Kristen Wiig-less sequel -- co-star Melissa McCarthy isn't so hot on the idea either. Last week, Universal said they were entertaining the possibility of doing 'Bridesmaids 2,' sans Wiig. When McCarthy was asked about this over the weekend, she did not seem too happy about. "God, I wouldn't want to, I would never want to. I think it's a terrible idea," the actress told E!
'Bridesmaids,' which turned into one of the most surprising box office successes of 2011, made instant stars out of SNL's Wiig -- who has been nominated for a Golden Globe -- and McCarthy. While there aren't any concrete story lines for a sequel, one idea that was floated by Universal revolved around McCarthy's character. Good luck with that now, folks!

George Clooney Charms On National Board Of Review Red Carpet

NEW YORK — Is there anything George Clooney can't do at this point? A nearly perennial presence on the awards-season circuit and just so freaking dapper in a tuxedo he's almost a parody of himself, Clooney managed to gently mock a reporter at the glittering National Board of Review red carpet Tuesday night — "I was going to say, where the hell's the tie?" — and it still came off as charming.
For the record, Mr. Clooney, the reporter in question was going for the casual, unshaven look — though it's difficult to stand next to the "Descendants" star and come off looking good, especially when the A-lister has girlfriend Stacy Keibler on his arm. Oh well. At NBR's bash, the focus was on film — ones that we're going to be talking a lot about as the Golden Globes and Oscar approach. For Clooney, though, the goal in making movies like "Descendants" and "Ides of March" isn't about getting awards-season love.
"You don't do them for that," he told us. "You do them because you want to make films that last longer than an opening weekend. Both films were films I was really proud of and felt we could tell interesting stories and hope they find an audience. We were lucky enough that they did."
He's not the only one feeling fortunate. Joining Clooney on the carpet were folks like Rooney Mara, Emma Stone, Keira Knightley, Alec Baldwin, Seth Rogen, Naomi Watts, Sir Ben Kingsley, Helen Mirren, Lars Ulrich, Jessica Chastain, Michael Fassbender and Martin Scorsese. For his part, Rogen couldn't quite believe he and his film "50/50" were part of all the craziness.
"It slowly keeps happening," he said of the continuing stream of nominations. "Every time we get one thing, I think that's going to be the last one for sure — and then we get another one. I remember for the Golden Globes, I didn't even wake up to see. I honestly did not assume we were going to get nominations for any of this."
"Hugo" star Asa Butterfield echoed that sentiment when he confessed to MTV News, "I'm surprised. What's to like about me?"
A lot, kid! But hey, humility was the theme at the NBR, as star after star professed him or herself simply happy to be along for the ride — which is not to say these folks don't think they've delivered something special.
"I knew we had something the moment we arrived in Mississippi July 11," "The Help" star Viola Davis said. "It's a special story. It's a human story. It's an honest story. No other movie this year looks like this — all these women, all these races, all these ages. I knew we had something."
